Executive Summary: Media FOR Movements Exploration

Overview

On May 12, 2021, a exploratory meeting was held between members of the Media to Movements Training Coalition, the Mobile Ministry Forum, Vision 5:9 Media Strategies Task Force and Media4Movements. The goal was to interact with leaders of a current DMM in Southeast Asia to learn how media might be able to help them accelerate their work.

Key Ideas

  1. There is a growing need for media-based discipleship resources for the rapidly growing MBBs in SE Asia. Movements are messy and most of discipleship materials are shared through verbal means.
  2. Media content that gets into that empathetic space to reach out to the audience regarding social issues are lacking.
  3. At least 60% of the population, regardless of age uses media of some kind.
  4. The bottlenecks and pain points are: security, not enough media content to for movement development, limited access to devices and the internet.
  5. One of the identified next steps is to help local leaders in the field to form new core teams focusing on media. There is also a need to develop capacity to reach out to regional teams to train with basic software and other programs.
  6. Believers in the movements are passionate in fishing and creating ways to fish for new believers. With the thousands of believers involved, they have a large captive audience and not enough leaders to mentor these groups. The constraint is on feeding and not fishing.
  7. Some specific things that could help will be in the creation of image-based videos out of the 36 Bible studies and other content. To consider security, we need SD cards to give a core resource of the media and scripture packets to hand out.
  8. Bottlenecks are production, distribution of content focused on building up leaders from the top-down (within the network).
  9. How do we augment production, to do practical small studios and create pipelines for distribution?
  10. Whatever we train needs to be simple and replicable fast enough.
