Presenter Notes:

Why did we use media strategy?

  • Our approach to using media is a little bit backward compared to other teams that I previously talked to. Majority of our results are through using DMM principles, prayer walking, modeling and discipling. We have a healthy group of leaders and disciple makers as we started using media efforts. As we get contacts online, it was easier to fit them into our already built network.
  • Scale is one of the top reasons why we are now using media.
  • Media addresses the challenges we face such as border shutdowns and restrictions. Most of the countries around us are having unrest. It is getting harder to walk around the country freely.

Lessons Learned:

  • If people think that a content is created by a foreigner, they tend to avoid it. The most important thing for us is to find local believers to fill the roles especially content creation.
  • All content has to be contextualized and in local language.
  • Our response rate is very high for video content compared to other kinds of content.
  • Having seasoned multipliers help scale results when we added in media strategy.
  • One of our more effective campaigns are on “Who is Jesus?” or “Have you dreamed about the man in white?”.
  • The campaign that has tragically backfired on us is when we use the word “help” due to what it actually means on the local context.

Q&A

  • How did you find the people to fill the roles on your team?  I was getting messages from believers from North and West Africa so I used the online platform to train digital responders and offline multipliers.
  • What kind of content do you use? Most of what we are doing are short still images and text with local language audio over the top.
  • What types of responses pique your interest and warrant further dialogue? It is hard not to get into debates but questions that are not intended for debate or asking for aid are usually worth pursuing further dialogue.
  • What kind of help are you looking for? The most helpful for us are those who can put all our raw materials together.
